Habits That Ruin Your Skin: 10 Everyday Mistakes

October 3, 2025 by Muzz

As all of us want a refreshing, glowing, shining, healthy skin but somehow, knowingly or unknowingly, we have some bad habits that are ruining our dream of youthful skin. Skincare products may give instant results but due to these bad habits, instead of getting better skin, it worsens it. Without actualizing it, we engage ourselves in routines that destroy our skin. From how we sleep to what we eat, these small things can lead to premature aging, breakouts, acnes, dullness, etcetera.

Here we are giving you 10 small habits that could be ruining your skin and what to do instead:

01. Touching Your Face Constantly

Resting your hands on your face or chin may feel harmless but certainly, its not. Your hands are breeding ground from various types of bacteria, oils and dirt that are accumulated on hands when you touch various things like your phone, laptop, door, etcetera. So when you rest your chin on your hands or touch your face, you are transferring all of these germs, bacteria, oils and dirt to your face and pores leading to clogging and breakouts worsening acne and irritation.

  • Solution: Make significant efforts to avoid touching your face. If it is must to touch (e.g., to apply skincare), must watch your hands first.

02. Not Wearing Sunscreen Indoors

Many people skip sunscreen on cloudy days or indoors thinking that you are inside your car or room and you do not need sunscreen. It is one of the primary mistakes people often do. The harmful UV rays that are primary cause of premature aging and pigmentation can penetrate through clouds and windows and affects your skin miserably. Skipping it leads to wrinkles, dark spots, acnes, and long-term skin damage one can think of.

  • Solution: Always apply broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 whether you are outside or at your home to avoid such long-term skin health risks.

03. Over-Exfoliating

In a hunt for smooth skin, we do exfoliation as it removes dead skin cells, clogged pores and keeps your skin healthier and tighter. But sometimes we overdo do it whether with physical facial scrubs or potent acids which destroy the skin’s moisture barrier leading to redness, sensitivity, and microtears in the skin. It can also cause inflammation as your skin tries to produce extra oils to compensate it.

  • Solution: Keep it sweet and simple. Just 2 to 3 times a week, or less depending on your skin type and its natural oil balance.

04. Not Washing Your Face

As we all know the “no makeup to bed” rule, but washing face before bed is as essential as removing makeup. When you don’t wash your face, you are taking all the dirt, pollution, sweat and bacteria on your face to soak in your skin overnight. Similar is the case when you don’t wash your face after a sweat session like after Gym. All the sweat and germ soak up on your skin leading to major problems like clogged pores and acnes.

  • Solution: Use a gentle cleanser of your skin type before bed every night. If you workout, then wash your face shortly after to avoid such problems.

05. Sleeping on a Dirty Pillow

Night after night, your pillow case becomes a house of errors as it collects dead skin cells, sweat, hair product residue, oil and dirt. Your face is to be pressed against it for almost 6-8 hours which can clog pores and also cause acne if you have pretty much sensitive skin. Cleanliness has to be on the spot like everything.

  • Solution: Take proper care and wash your pillow case at least once or twice a week to if you have acne-prone skin. You can also use Silk or satin pillowcases.

06. Poor Diet Choices

Diet plays the key part in your skin health. Take nutrient-rich food, fish provide antioxidants and fats for glowing skin. Diets rich in sugar, fried foods and processed snacks can trigger dullness and premature aging. But the time of diet is also important. Even if you take the right diet at wrong time, it will do more harm than good. Avoid eating heavy meals or snacks late night. Your body and organs need rest and it is the time of healing for the body.

  • Solution: Avoid fatty and processed foods, take healthy diet with proper timings. Avoid over eating and high sugar food.

07. Not Drinking Enough Water

Dehydration is one of the primary causes of your dry skin and making your skin look tired. Water flushes out toxins, improves elasticity and youthfulness and makes your skin glow and shine. Aim for at least 8-10 glasses of water or more (if you live in harsh climate like Middle East or Africa).

  • Solution: Drink enough water. Add hydrating foods like cucumber, oranges, and watermelon.

08. Sleeping On Your Stomach or Side

Most of the people do not know but your sleeping position can actually affect your skin. When you press your face against pillow for hours create creases and can accelerate wrinkle formation leading to premature aging. With the passage of time, the condition worsens and skin become worse day by day.

  • Solution: If possible, try to sleep on your back, or invest in silk pillowcases that reduce friction on your skin.

09. Ignoring Stress and Sleep Deprivation

Stress hormones trigger breakouts, dullness, and flare-ups of conditions like eczema or psoriasis. Pair that with a lack of quality sleep, and your skin barely gets a chance to repair itself. Skin becomes dull, looks tired, premature aging are the constant factors that appear if you ignore sleep. When you’re stressed, your body releases cortisol, a hormone that increases oil production and inflammation, leading to breakouts, redness, and a weakened skin barrier

  • Solution: Incorporate stress-reducing activities like walking, meditation, or reading. Prioritize 7-9 hours of quality sleep per night.

10. Taking Excessively Hot Showers

The long, steamy shower in winters might feel prodigious, but it’s stripping your skin of natural oils leaving it dry, dull, irritated, itchy and leading to conditions like eczema. It can create serious problems if not treated well.

  • Solution: Go for lukewarm water and try to keep your showers under 10 minutes. Apply a moisturizer immediately.

Conclusion

Your skin reflects your daily choices more than you realize. While skincare products can help, the real secret lies in breaking harmful habits and adopting healthier ones. By avoiding these common mistakes, whether it’s skipping sunscreen, overwashing, or neglecting sleep, you give your skin the chance to stay clear, youthful, and radiant.

Glowing skin isn’t about perfection or expensive routines. It’s about consistency, self-care, and small changes that protect your skin in the long run. Start correcting these habits today and your future self will thank you for the glow.

“Good skin is the result of good habits.”
